Inuits.
By harnessing their cold environment and savage beasts, the Eskimos of Northern Canada are an ideal example of human survival despite hardship. Impact of the Environment. The Inuits of Northern Canada live in the cold of the arctic circle, and as the environment does not offer much natural shelter from the cold, they had to 'shape' what they could out of what they had. The most common shelter of the Eskimos was- and still is- the Igloos: dwellings made from blocks of ice to keep the snow and wind out, but also strong enough to have fires inside without it collapsing. The Inuits of Northern Canada also invented one of the first Kayaks which they call qajaq a seal skin covered boat, which the Europeans and Americans copied and still manufacture to this day. The Inuits impact on the environment. Out of the Eskimos impacts on their environment perhaps the most obvious one is the harnessing of wolves for dog sleds, a form of transportation. The Husky breed of dog comes from an Inuit breeding of dogs for transportation. The dogs used by the Inuits impact their environment by hunting for Eskimos and protecting the villages. This is favourable for the Inuits but perhaps not for the animals. Food The Inuits most common food consists of whale, seal, polar bears and birds. Since the Inuits cannot cultivate any plants due to the cold environment, in the warmer seasons they take advantage of the berries, stems and grasses by eating them or storing them. As the Inuits rarely come across plants the environment hardly gets affected by the Eskimos population. |
